Currently the largest African exporter of crude oil to China, Angola’s relations with the Asian giant seem to have gone from strength to strength. Such ties are not without their tensions however. She will take a look at Angola’s developing relations with China in broad strokes and delve into the impact felt in Angola, both political and socio-economic.
Our guest presenter Lucy Corkin is Research Associate of both the Africa-Asia Centre at SOAS, University of London and the Centre for Chinese Studies, University of Stellenbosch, the only research Centre on the African continent dedicated to China-Africa research. Besides lecturing at the University of Stellenbosch, she has made presentations on political economy of China-Africa relations to government, business, and academic audiences internationally. She has written extensively for local and foreign newspapers, and China publications and provided commentary to local and international media on China’s relations with Africa. Fluent in both Mandarin and Portuguese, Lucy’s research interests focus on China’s emerging role as a financier of African development, as well as China-Angola relations.
