Get out of the city and put on your hiking boots! The Angolan Field Group has been invited to climb up Mount Sumi, 25 kilometers south of Huambo city.
Huambo is perched on the plateau of Angola, and offers a cool fresh environment thanks to its high elevation. You will be hiking approximately 20 kilometers with about 300 meters altitude gain, surrounded by a landscape of ancient hills and mountains that form part of the African Shield. We will meet the Soba of the mountain and view his traditional water powered maize mill. Our guide is a Swiss expat who has made Huambo his home for the past 6 years.
Our first day in the provincial capital will be spent on a walking info/historic tour and a visit to the big informal market, ‘Mercado Alemanha’ or the ‘German Market’, thus named because the market opened just as the World Cup kicked off in Germany. The market is very safe and also happens to be the site where the Portuguese built the first fort that gave birth to the town. In the late afternoon we will head out of town for a braai.
This trip has never been done before by the Angola Field Group and we are looking for flexible people with an adventuresome spirit who do not require luxury. We will be accommodated in a homestay and all transport in Huambo will be provided as well as guides. Meals will be provided by the homestay except one lunch and one dinner will be taken at a local restaurant at your own expense. Boiled water will be provided by the homestay.
You must purchase your own return airline ticket ($290 USD), Air 26, the most reliable service, departing Luanda on Saturday, May 30 at 7:00 AM and returning on June 01 which is a national holiday. All airport transfers in Luanda are your responsibility. Participants who prefer to drive to Huambo on Friday are welcome to drive. It is an approximate 7 hour journey on very good roads.
This Field Trip has very limited space and will fill immediately. Costs in addition to the airline ticket are being finalized but will run approximately $300.00 to $330.00, based on two nights accommodation. A complete itinerary and map will be emailed to confirmed participants.
Please only send an email to Henriette at angolafieldgroup@gmail.com if you are serious about going.
